We are Connected (16 videos)

March 07, 2018

16 new slideshow videos are now up on my website – We are Connected. But first, allow me to tell you how they came about…

Over the last few years I’ve been thinking about both my archive and how the audience interacts with photography and have had several exhibitions exploring these themes.

In 2015, I, along with 5 other photographers who had attended Berkshire College of Art and Design, held an exhibition at Turbine House, Reading. We presented photographs from 30 years previously and contrasted it with new work. I also took new photographs of the area during community photo walks I organized and at the close of the exhibition we also exhibited the photographs taken by the exhibition visitors.

In 2016, with a different set of photographers, the photographic collective I belong to, [( 6 )], decided to connect with each other and with place. We met in Oxford, UK, for a weekend of photography. I went with the idea of waiting to see what aspects of Oxford would draw me upon arrival. Our photographs were then displayed at the Riverside Gallery in Oxford, Nova Scotia, Canada. Whilst there I briefly photographed Oxford, Nova Scotia too.

In 2017, finishing an MA in fine Art, I needed to choose what work I would share for the final exhibition at the Civic in Barnsley, UK, whilst acknowledging it was important to me that the audience would be engaged in the work.

With this exhibition I wanted to take audience participation to a new level and so chose to not hang any of my photographs. Instead I presented boxes containing 16 photo projects from the last three years. These photographs were made in response to reflecting on my existing archive and the continuation of adding to it. A circular route revisiting old haunts, exploring current routes and encountering new places. One journey, ending with this archive, the corroboration of my connection to place.

Gallery visitors walked into a room that contained a table (with a book to write in), a wall with metal strips and magnets and a window where the portfolio boxes were stored across 8 shelves. They were invited to delve into the archive. Handle the photographs. Feel my process unfold and their route through it. Find their visual or personal associations, by shuffling the prints in their boxes, laying them on the table or the floor, mixing one project with another. They completed the journey by curating and hanging the final exhibition as they wanted it. A collaboration between us if you will, connecting through the journey to the final destination.

The visitors shared their process and results with me and other gallery visitors and through writing about their experience and choices and finally photographing their exhibition. Some of these photographs are featured on my instagram page

You can see some of the work and contact details for the other artists in the Exhibition catalogue

These photographs show the gallery space (sans people), visitors sorting through photographs on the table and hanging them on the wall (with the magnets) – more over on instagram, including some of the final curated exhibitions.

The sixteen videos of the photographs in each of the 16 boxes can be seen H E R E
I’d get a drink and a biscuit before you start if you want to see them all!

Thanks for your interest. I’m working on something new for an exhibition coming up in Germany in October so stay tuned for that!

Time and the journey

June 07, 2017

It’s been 3 years!

I’ve been working on an MA in Fine Arts with the Open College of the Arts in the UK and next week is the final exhibition. Being part time over three years meant that it’s been impossible to anticipate where I would be at the end of it and it has been a journey that’s for sure.

I have met all of the cohort online, there’s 10 of us, from 6 countries and we’ve met via google hangout, sometimes several times a month over the years, but we’ve never all been on one continent together…

That’ll change next week though when we hang the exhibition! Finally we will be connected physically too – the journey has a destination and it’s Barnsley!

The exhibition:
We Are Connected – will be at the Civic in Barnsley, UK
Civic link
The private view will be on Wednesday 14th June at 6.30pm – want to come? Just let me know!
I’ll be at the gallery also on Thursday 15th, Friday 16th and Saturday 17th, please stop by and say hello!

So what’s the exhibition about? Who are the 10 artists?

I am going to show you photographs that I have exhibited.
They are all professionally mounted in frames with hanging wire
& currently living in a dark, unloved space!
They are looking for a new home, so if you know of one, make me an offer!
I’ll hand deliver in Manhattan, Berkshire UK or if you can wait Barnsley!
I’ll add to this post everyday of the next week, so check back or check in with Facebook

ˈfōtō ˈfôrtˌnīt frīdē

January 30, 2017

I’ve been a bit lax at posting- I’ve been sick and I’ve been marching!
So here are the last 2 fōtō ˈfôrtˌnīt frīdē photos for January.

The first fōtō ˈfôrtˌnīt frīdē…

would have been a more impressive photo from the bridge looking down, onto 42nd Street at Grand Central but..

As an aside the bridge seen here is featured in a very different photograph of mine that will be hanging at Jadite Gallery, 413 W 50th St. NYC – I’ll be at the opening on Thursday February 2nd why not stop by and say Hi!

UPDATE!

November 22, 2016

It’s been a busy few months traveling here and there and I have been very lax at blogging so here is an update after the fact of what I’ve been up to since September.

[( 6 )]

We went to Oxford.
2 summers ago [( 6 )], the photography collective I am in, held an exhibition in Sheffield, but not all of us attended, and as such the six of us had never met all together! This autumn we had a plan to not only get together but also to photograph at the same time.

We spent a September weekend in Oxford, UK, finally all meeting and ‘doing’ Oxford in our various photographic fashions. Here are 5 of the [( 6 )] (Yes it has been summer of the selfie!)

6-selfie
6-other-side-of-the-selfie

2 of the [( 6 )], Rob™ and I, gathered everyone’s prints and made our way to Oxford, Nova Scotia, Canada where we met with Mathew Aldred who runs the Oxford Riverside Gallery. The three of us along with invaluable helpers, framed and hung 72 photographs and opened the exhibition on Friday October 21st. BTW if you happen to pass through Oxford NS with your camera, the gallery will be hosting an exhibition of photos of its own Oxford in January 2017.

Whilst we were in Oxford, NS I also took a few photographs, at some point in the future I will add both Oxfords to the project page of my website – please be patient with me!

TATE MODERN

Last week I was thrilled to have two of my photographs shown at the Tate in London. Shown on the same night as a talk by Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen who’s work I really like.

I had two photographs selected in the call for photographs on the theme of (re:) thinking the street put out by UPF – Urban Photo Festival. Fellow [( 6 )] photographer Keith Greenough also had a photograph selected and he was lucky enough to get down there. I was lucky that he took some shots of our work, Thanks Keith! All 20 photographs were screened for the duration of the evening.

My next project is to take some time to process my Oxford UK and Oxford CA photographs and to hit the streets of NYC again. Hopefully back here rather sooner next time!

Tonight !

November 03, 2016

Excited and disappointed!
Tonight at the Tate Modern in London there’s a talk by fantastic photographer Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen. One of a long weekend of activities during the Urban Photo Festival. Also showing tonight at the Tate – 20 photographs on the theme of (re:) Thinking the street. 2 of these are mine and one from collective member Keith Greenough! Why disappointed? I’m not able to be there – let me know if you make it!
