Friends,
I’m excited to announce that my project, Phase 4, is included in the International Center of Photography’s exhibition “#ICPConcerned: Global Images for Global Crisis”
#ICPConcerned: Global Images for Global crisis presents a selection of photographs collected from the ICP Concerned hashtag on Instagram, initiated by the International Center of Photography in march 2020. The images, chosen by ICP staff across departments, present a wide range of responses to recent events worldwide, from the COVID-19 pandemic to Black Lives Matter protests and beyond.
The exhibition @ICP in New York City will continue to grow alongside the Instagram archive in the coming months, eventually encompassing 1,000 images. It will be on view once @ICP reopens. For now the exhibition will live online and updates and images will be uploaded on instagram @ICP. There will also be Zoom curator tours and audio about individual images.

NYC is in phase 4 of re-opening after being ‘paused’ back in March to try and contain the Corona virus. NYC had a hell of a time, but for the last couple of months the infection rate has held steady at between 1-2% of all those tested. Wearing masks, social distancing, washing hands and a huge surge of respecting and caring for each other has got us to the other side of the mountainous curve.
Of course its taken a huge toll on so many people who were, and still are, sick and dying, but its also hurt economically.
At the end of July entering Phase 4 allowed restaurants, who had delivery and pick up but not dining in, to reopen to customers, but not to have them indoors, only outside. The city allowed restaurants to take over parking spots outside their restaurants and a plethora of new wooden structures have sprung up, using city guidelines, but also a lot of imagination.
This project, along the M15 bus route that I so frequently travel and photograph, looks at just a few of these outdoor dining areas, between 1st and 14th streets as they were starting to go up.
